With gas prices sinking lower and plane ticket prices continuing to soar, AAA estimates that many more Virginians will be traveling by car during the upcoming holiday weekend.

AAA Mid-Atlantic estimated that about 7 percent more residents of the Commonwealth will be traveling this year than last year during the same weekend. Last year’s numbers were likely deflated by the economic recession, and even as worries over the economy continue, travelers will be less hesitant to hit the roads this year.

In addition to more drivers, more police will also be on the roads as part of the Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort, which aims to reduce crashes and fatalities specifically related to speed and drunk driving.

Nationally, gas prices have been sinking gradually for the last two weeks. The trend will likely continue into this weekend, giving drivers an extra incentive to make longer rides for the Memorial Day holiday.
