The CarMax Foundation has awarded a grant of $155,000 to the Enrichmond Foundation for use by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities to build a new basketball court, restore an existing building for use as a concession facility, and expand league play to include more Richmond youth and a new wheelchair league. This is the firth year that CarMax has supported youth basketball in the city. Since 2007, the CarMax Foundation has given more than $500,000 to restore and expand the department’s basketball courts at Pine Camp and fund league play for hundreds of Richmond youth between the ages of 10 and 17.

Guest speakers include; Richmond Chief Administrative Officer Byron Marshall, CarMax President and CEO Tom Folliard, CarMax Foundation President Lynn Mussatt, Richmond Director of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities Dr. Norman C. Merrifield. Other City and CarMax Officials and Youth Basketball Teams and Radio One’s “Miss Community” Clovia Lawrence.

What does a stunning victory and a trip to the Final Four earn you if you’re Richmond, Virginia, home of the VCU Rams? Well, for starters, the Rams will be the BIGGEST story on ESPN this week, major TV networks will be flying into the capital city to film and document VCU’s historic run in the NCAA Tournament. When you sit back and realize what the Rams have accomplished, it is simply incredible. Having both VCU and the Univ. of Richmond in the Sweet 16 was certainly a public relations home run for the city, but this! The Final Four? This town is goin’ bananas!!!!!

The childhood obesity rates are high in Virginia.  A bill was introduced in the General Assembly to activate 150 minutes of physical education a week.  Opponents to the bill said it would cost local districts millions of dollars and take away from other instructional programs.

Governor Bob McDonnell is a proponent of exercise but agreed that the local districts just could not afford it as we look ahead to 2014.   Governor Bob McDonnell has vetoed the “Physical Education” bill that would have required elementary and middle schools to take 150 minutes a week of physical education.

Thomas E. Haynesworth of Richmond VA,  got his freedom yesterday after spending  27 years behind bars for crimes he didn’t commit.  Haynesworth was an 18-year-old high school dropout when was arrested and as been proclaiming his innocence ever since. Virginia Governor Robert F. Mc­Don­nell (R) asked the parole board to review Haynesworth’s case, which lead to to his release. The state of Virginia is supporting Haynesworth’s bid to have the Virginia Court of Appeals issue a “Writ of Actual Innocence.”
