Wind power could be the future of Virginia’s energy supply. Due to the oil spill disaster in the Gulf, many officials are starting to open an eye to alternative energy sources off the coast of The Commonwealth. According to the Defense Department, commercial wind turbines could generate at least 10 percent of the states annual energy demand.

“The Same place where you might want to do oil rigs off the coast of Virginia, there’s actually pretty favorable wind conditions,” said Former Gov. Timothy Kaine. “First you have to weigh environmental safety as well as the significant naval and NASA operations.”

The Military could have an interest in supporting alternative energy sources such as wind. The Navy has set forth goals to have 50 percent of its land-based energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.

“The Navy is willing to work with the offshore wind industry because they know the importance of it, and they’re really enthusiastic for opportunity to work with us,” said Hank Griffin, a retired Navy Vice admiral and a member of a coalition promoting offshore winds.
